N° 030 Enterprise Edition

Pimcore Enterprise Edition – when the subscription is actually worth it.

"Enterprise" sounds like the better choice. In practice, the subscription is only worth it when a specific bundle is genuinely in play, not because the name sounds bigger than Community.

Pimcore comes in four editions: Community (self-hosted, licensed under the Pimcore Open Core License), Professional (commercial license with support and LTS, on-premises), Enterprise (Professional plus the full enterprise bundle catalog plus 24/7 support, optionally with DirectConnect), and PaaS (Pimcore's own managed cloud, including the enterprise bundles). Comparing these editions usually leads to the wrong question: "Which edition is best?" The question that actually matters: "Which bundle do I genuinely need, and does that justify a running subscription?"

What's Included in the Pimcore Enterprise Edition?

At its core, an Enterprise contract is a commercial license, which removes the POCL revenue threshold that applies to Community, plus access to a catalog of bundles that are only installable from Pimcore's private Composer repository. Not from Packagist, only with valid subscription credentials. Once the subscription lapses, those bundles stop receiving updates, even though the already-installed code keeps running locally.

The Enterprise Bundles at a Glance

Portal Engine: product experience portals and asset experience portals for dealers, partners, and press

Copilot Bundle: a backend AI assistant that works against OpenAI-compatible endpoints, among others, including Anthropic Claude

Enterprise Asset Metadata: extended metadata class definitions for DAM

Workflow Designer: visual configuration of approval and editing workflows

Data Quality Management Bundle: rules and monitoring for data quality

Statistics Explorer: analytics over backend data

Translations Provider Interfaces: adapters for external translation services, including DeepL

The commercial Enterprise editions of the E-Commerce Framework, Web2Print, and Personalization, which were split out of the GPL line as of Pimcore 12

When Enterprise Is Actually Worth It

An Enterprise subscription pays off when a bundle is in play that has no reasonable substitute, a dealer portal built on Portal Engine, a Copilot deployment at scale, an ee-commerce initiative tied directly to the PIM data model. It generally doesn't pay off for a single webhook or a feature that custom code on Community can solve just as well. That distinction is the core of our advisory work: we're independent of Pimcore and don't sell a subscription because it's our business, we work through with you whether the bundle in question actually solves your real problem, or whether a leaner solution is enough. This build-vs-buy analysis is part of every Enterprise Data & MDM project where enterprise bundles are on the table.

What Enterprise Is Not

Enterprise is not a prerequisite for running Pimcore in production. The core runs fully on Community, unlimited in entities and users. Nor is Enterprise a shortcut to open source: the bundles themselves are commercially licensed and only usable with an active subscription, regardless of the fact that the Pimcore core stays open source. We also deliberately don't quote concrete annual prices for Professional, Enterprise, or PaaS here, because current terms change; they're only reliably verifiable directly with Pimcore.

Enterprise or Community? The Short Version

The full decision guide with the revenue threshold, product registration, and the classic admin UI's pricing logic lives on its own page: Pimcore Enterprise vs. Community. In short: Community carries practically every Pimcore project up to the point where an enterprise bundle is genuinely needed, or the free-use revenue threshold is exceeded. From there, Enterprise (or Professional, if no bundle access is needed, only the threshold relief) is the logical next step.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

What's included in the Pimcore Enterprise Edition?

A commercial license without the POCL revenue threshold, 24/7 support, and access to the full enterprise bundle catalog: including Portal Engine, Copilot, Enterprise Asset Metadata, Workflow Designer, Data Quality Management, Statistics Explorer, and the commercial Enterprise editions of E-Commerce, Web2Print, and Personalization.

What does Pimcore Enterprise cost?

That depends on scope and contract model. We deliberately don't state concrete annual prices here, since they can change. Verify them through Pimcore directly, or through our audit once it's clear which bundles are actually needed.

Do I need Pimcore Enterprise?

Only if at least one enterprise bundle solves your actual problem, for example a dealer portal, a Copilot deployment, or an ee-commerce initiative. For most pure PIM/MDM projects, Community or Professional is enough.

What's the difference between Enterprise and Professional?

Professional is the commercial license with support and LTS, but without the enterprise bundles. Enterprise adds the full bundle catalog and 24/7 support.

Can I keep running enterprise bundles without an active subscription?

The already-installed code keeps running, but stops receiving updates once the subscription ends (a growing risk as security issues and Pimcore version changes accumulate).

Is the Pimcore Enterprise Edition open source?

No. The Pimcore core stays open source, but the enterprise bundles come from a private repository and are commercially licensed, independent of the core's license model.

What is Pimcore PaaS, and is it the same as Enterprise?

PaaS is Pimcore's own managed cloud environment with SLAs, and it also includes the enterprise bundles. The difference from Enterprise lies in the operating model (managed vs. self-hosted), not in bundle access.
